Graduated from the Technion in Architecture and Urban Planning (1974) and architectural conservation studies at ICCROM, the Conservation School in Rome (1984). The founder of the field of conservation at the Israel Antiquities Authority and its director until 1995. Director of the project department of the Getty Institute for Conservation in Los Angeles in the years 1995-2000. Project manager for the establishment of the conservation school in Dresden, Germany in 2000-2001.

He served as Chairman of ICOMOS Israel (1993-1996), as Secretary General of the Professional Training Committee of ICOMOS Global, as ICOMOS World Honorary Treasurer and as ICOMOS World Representative at UNESCO.

Managed survey, documentation, planning and conservation tasks for dozens of projects in Israel and around the world. Among the many sites in which he was active: the building of the First Knesset and many sites in the area of Jerusalem, the Sarona project in Tel Aviv, the Roman theatre of Shuni, Acre, Susita and Hamat Gader in Israel, as well as many sites in the world, including: the sites of Pamukkale, Bursa and Alanya in Turkey, Hangzhou, Macao and Xi’an in China, Split in Croatia and more.

Solar advises the Israeli Institute of Archaeology since its foundation and is an active partner in navigating the project in ancient Lod and also serves as an editorial member of the journal, Lod “Diospolis – City of God”.
